Class Action Lawyer Needs Our Help

Update: Alberta Government Watching Closely Click here to see.

I am not sure if anyone is familiar with the Alberta Class Action law suit which has been launched in Alberta on behalf of foster children and former foster children who were not compensated for abuse suffered before or after entering foster care, for children who were taken into care without proper plans of care being made for them, and more.

One of the Lawyers involved, Robert P. Lee, has been taken to the Law Society in Alberta with complaints filed against him by the opposing lawyers (or the Crown?) I am not 100% sure who

Anyhow, the Law Society has already convicted Robert P. Lee of a couple of the seven allegations against him of breaching professional conduct etc. and the next time he appears before the Law Society it is for them to decide how to punish him (sentencing). Do they remove him from being able to practice law? To prevent him from helping these foster kids and former foster kids to take the government to court?

A sample letter will be provided at the end of this post for those who feel they want to support him, but are not exactly sure what to write.

I am asking everyone to please write a letter in support of him remaining as a lawyer because it is in the public interest that he remain able to work on behalf of current, former and future foster children. That he remain on the case to act as the voice for the most vulnerable who are rarely in the position to bring legal action against the child welfare authorities due to limited resources and a lack of lawyers willing to put in the time required to initiate and follow through on such an action.

Feel free to mention whether you feel it is in the public interest that Mr. Robert P. Lee remain active as a lawyer and that you believe (if you do) that he has endured enough public embarrassment and humiliation as a result of these allegations and the overall disciplinary hearings against him, and that they have already had the desired effect of deterring similar behaviour in the future.

End your letter emphasizing once again, the importance in the PUBLIC INTEREST across CANADA of Robert P. Lee acting on behalf of the Alberta's thousands of current, former and future foster children since far too often these vulnerable citizens can not find any legal representation to assist them with their claims related to child welfare abuse and neglect.

I rarely ask people to take part in writing campaigns however I feel that this particular issue, this particular lawyer, one of the very few who have stuck themselves out there for vulnerable children and youth and their families deserves our support.

It should only take five minutes to write a quick letter of support mentioning the public importance and public interest across CANADA of his staying on as a lawyer

Are you able to give five minutes of your time for this man who has given hundreds of hours so far for foster kids?

Please send your letters to Robert P. Lee at leerobertp@netscape.net or call him at 1-780-438-4972 x306 and give him your contact information so he can contact you back. Also let me know if you contacted him.

The allegations against Robert P. Lee to the Law Society regarding professional misconduct, you will see do not pertain to him scamming a bunch of people from their money etc. or anything else of such an immoral character. He appears to simply be a guy who appears to have become a bit upset periodically when dealing with child welfare authorities and their Counsel. (raising voice at them etc) Have you ever been upset at child welfare authorities and their counsel? Do you think he deserves to stay on as a lawyer to help these vulnerable citizens? Let the Law Society know your feelings.

Again, the letter below is simply a guide to help you focus your letter on the issues which may be relevant to the sentencing hearing and to the Law Society. Please send the letters to Robert P. Lee so that he can bring them to the correct offices or people.

RE: Robert P. Lee
(still editing)

It is my belief that Robert P. Lee is acting in the public interest in this class action law suit on behalf of the most vulnerable citizen's of Canada, those without parental care living under the authority of the provincial government.

Just the fact that he has been brought before the Law Society for disciplinary hearings regarding his conduct over the past few years, conduct which has at times been the result of frustration caused by the actions or inactions of the Government leads me to believe that Robert P. Lee has suffered enough public embarrassment, stress and inconvenience, all of which detract from the good work he should be taking the time that has been used in relation to these hearings for his legal matter.

Please, at the request of myself, a member of the public who has no personal or professional connection with Robert P. Lee, consider all of what I have mentioned in this letter in your decision regarding Robert P. Lee, as once again, I believe he is working in the public interest for the most vulnerable people in the province, let alone the entire country of Canada.

Sincerely,

  2. Done!

I, too, know Robert Lee and can attest that is a man of honour committed to people who are wronged.

Lee is opposed by Government only for his candid, frank portrayal of unlawful cases underscoring the wrongs by Ministry.

NO ONE else, but R. Lee will represent people who are wronged by Government entities... No one!

Please, do honour our children by supporting this gentleman in his pursuit of justice!

  3. Lawyer battles an atrocious Alberta legacy

    By ANDREW HANON

    March 2009

Muriel Stanley Venne of the Institute for the Advancement of Aboriginal women calls Robert Lee "the most courageous lawyer in Alberta."
Lee prefers to think of himself simply as "a lawyer trying to do the right thing for the most vulnerable people in Alberta."

On Friday, the institute presented Lee with its Social Justice Award for his work on behalf of kids who suffered abuse in foster care....
Presenting Lee's award was NDP MLA Rachel Notley, who wants an independent inquiry into the foster care system.

    RE: Robert P. Lee

It is my belief that Robert P. Lee is acting in the public interest in this class action law suit on behalf of the most vulnerable citizen's of Canada... those without parental care living under the authority of the provincial government.

Just the fact that Robert has recently been brought before the Law Society for disciplinary hearings regarding his conduct over the past few years, conduct which has at times been the result of frustration caused by the actions or inactions of the Government as already acknowledged by the tribunal, leads me to believe that Robert P. Lee has suffered enough public embarrassment, stress, and inconvenience which in and of themselves will have the desired deterrent effect upon his conduct in the future, and, all of which have already detracted from the good work he should be taking the time to do as opposed to having that time used up for the purposes of these hearings.

Please, at the request of myself, a member of the public who has no personal or professional connection with Robert P. Lee, consider all of what I have mentioned in this letter in your sentencing decision regarding Robert P. Lee, as once again, I believe he is working in the public interest for the most vulnerable people in the province, let alone the entire country of Canada.

When we consider that individuals who have been convicted of criminal offenses are often given reductions in their sentences, I would hope that Robert P. Lee would be given similar or greater lenience in the public interest as he has committed no crime.

  5. If he doesn't stand up for the children who will?
Child welfare hasn't in the past or now. I mean look at all the problems these kids are having now. From Lorraine Cyr

  6. What is the status of Mr. Lee currently? How are things going with his class action law suit? The damages to children placed in care to this day are horrendous! They don't have to be. There is lots to be said for quality care and ONGOING contact with the family IS essential!!! Foster care should NOT be an option until ALL other avenues are exhausted. Less damage would be done to these :-( children if mote effort and money was put into the family and an effort was being made to place the children with their extended families. Failing that I am a believer in group homes because staff monitor staff! Usually if there is inappropriate conduct like yelling at the kids SOMEONE tells the boss. The kids can tell the boss and the offender is terminated or at least the behavior is addressed. In fostercare if a child complains about abuse nobody cares, especially not the social worker. I believe the fellow who was charged with what 13 accounts of sexual assualt on boys was probably reported to social workers at the time of some of the offenses. The social workers probably ignored or trivialized or didn't believe the children. "he was such a mice man" I'm sure.

I have another person now 27 to add to Me Lees list if he hasn't been disbarred for trying to help adult victims.

  7. I to am behind Mr Robert Lee I am a survivor of the child welfare system I was in care from 1980-1987 I am now 35 the father of 4 kids ages 11-16yrs old I have been with Robert Lee's office since 2004/05 and he and ONLY he was willing to help my Brother and I when no one else would.and I think this is just another way to silence Mr.Lee and the victim's of this government's abuse
thank you MR.Lee and shame on the Goverment of Alberta!!!

  8. I would like to know why child welfare doesn't want to deal with this and they keep coming up with excuses. And what difference does it make whether one was abused 50 years ago or just yesterday, the fact is, kids were abused while in the system. What part of that don't they understand? It needs to be dealt with. Child welfare is nothing but a bunch of cowards who don't want to deal with their mistakes.

  9. If child welfare would of charged my parents and caregivers for the abuse that they put on me in the 1960's and 70's then I would of never gotten involved with this class action lawsuit. The reason? I would of had my justice. This class action lawsuit is good now, because maybe the government will start listening, but then maybe not.

  10. Its funny thing about the government, they sure like to use the almighty dollar against us, yet when it comes to paying for their own mistakes, they pass the buck, or try to ignore the problem altogether. I don't know why everyone doesn't sue the government for all the wrong doings they do. All government is, is a bunch of people trying to control everyone else and uses money and or material junk against us. I don't know why we let government get away with things. I mean, they are not god!!!

    ReplyDelete
  11. the government would rather have us all keep our mouths shut, especially the children.

"God Said, suffer the little children" as an adult, i can now see why. There is no one to protect them. All government is, is a bunch of vultures with their hands out waiting for their paychecks.

  12. It's not Robert Lee who they should be going after.

So far(at the *other* firm) NOBODY has done ANYTHING on the file, it's left there to gather dust. Since one of their key employees left, NOBODY knows anything and nobody DOES anything and nobody has a freaking CLUE what's going on.

I'm working on my own file, my own submissions to government FOR my file, with no help.

    And i'm damn FRUSTRATED!!!

Robert Lee, from what i understand is a man who CARES! And they are doing a HUGE disservice to him and to those who rely on him for some form of JUSTICE.

  14. Yes, the government tried to have a judge not allow this "class action" lawsuit to go ahead because it means power in numbers (and theres a big number of us who have had NO justice) the government wanted to try each case individually so they could intimidate us individually. This is how government works, and I hope there will come a day when everyone can see government for what it really is and abolish this useless system once and for all.
